Georgia US Senator Jon Ossoff is among a group of lawmakers who are pushing to increase resources to fight the trafficking of fentanyl along the southern border.
“Those who are tuned in are likely well aware of the extreme danger posed by this highly addictive and lethal drug,” Ossoff said. “In 2023, more than 112,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, and synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, were involved in about two-thirds of those deaths.”
According to Ossoff, a vast amount of fentanyl is being smuggled through points of entry where the detection technology is insufficient.
“Just as I have been working to add more customs and border patrol agents to secure points of entry at our southern border, a group of us are working right now to increase the investment in the detection technology,” he said. “That technology will empower those officers to know who is carrying this stuff, to interdict it, and to prosecute those traffickers.”
