In the past, the Rome Police Department has warned the public of telephone calls, texts, and email scams that have been going around.
Examples have been reported that citizens are receiving calls or texts stating that the police department has important information for them about citations or misdemeanor warrants that have been issued.
This is a SCAM.
The Rome Police Department does not call citizens asking for payment of citations or issuance of warrants. Rome Municipal Court mails letters to persons who may have missed their court date.
If anyone receives a phone call or text similar to this you should immediately hang up. Do not give the caller any personal information.
The Floyd County Police Department recently warned the public of another scam that was floating around about T-shirts: “Lots of calls and messages about a phishing text that’s going around with a weird link from “rebrand” It’s not us! Don’t click on it! Several other police agencies are reporting similar texts in their communities.”
From the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office: “We have received reports that our number is being spoofed and trying to scam people saying they missed jury duty. This is a scam! Even if it shows up our main number, 706-291-4111, this is not legitimate… We will never call you telling you that you owe money for a fine or missing court. If we want you typically we come and get you.”
