Rome and Floyd County voters have overwhelmingly approved the extension of a one-penny sales tax for education.
In the city, there were 4,050 “Yes” votes and 1,279 “No” votes.
County voters also said yes by a margin of 7,078 votes to 4,234 votes.
The centerpiece of the city projects is a new Rome Middle School.
“This will help us tremendously as the city continues to grow and new homes are built,” said Rome City School Superintendent Louis Byars. “We will not try to be able to keep our class sizes small and continue to provide the best education possible for our students. This new middle school will help us do that by bringing in the 6th grade. I thank the public for their support and for trusting us to do the things we need to do.
The $130 million dollars would also go to fund a number of projects in the county school system.
Superintendent Dr. Glenn White told WRGA:
“We are very excited and happy that the voters of Rome and Floyd County voted to approve the ESPLOST! We’re grateful for their support to help benefit all of the children in our school system.”
