RCS College & Career Academy Hosts the RCS Annual Spelling Bee

January 26th, 2022 – 11:05 AM

Rome City Schools –

Fourteen Rome City Schools students gathered at the Rome City Schools College and Career Academy (CCA) on Tuesday morning, Jan. 25, to participate in the annual school-wide Spelling Bee.

There were two contestants representing each of the six RCS elementary schools, as well as Rome Middle School. A panel of three judges assisted moderator Scott Crabbe and caller Ruth Cipolla. Tod Wheeler, Stephanie Graves, and Gregory Wooten made up the judges panel, each representing one of the Spelling Bee sponsors: National Copiers, Coosa Valley Credit Union, and Communities in Schools Rome-Floyd County.

RMS student Liam Samples claimed the championship title and will move forward to compete in the regional Spelling Bee set for Feb. 6.

Christopher Neal of East Central Elementary took second place and Asa Cook of RMS took third place. Wooten presented each placing student with a medal of achievement, sponsored by CIS.

Each Spelling Bee contestant received a certificate of participation. An audience of parents and administrators were in attendance in support of the students. Also in attendance were Superintendent Louis Byars and Associate Superintendent Dr. Dawn Williams.

An audience of supporters was a refreshing change this year, given that the Bee was held entirely virtually last year.

Refreshments and photos with the beloved RCS Spelling Bee Champion banner followed the competition.

RMS will receive the Spelling Bee Champion banner until next year’s competition.
