September 28, 2021–11:09 a.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Rome City Commission honors a special citizen, who recently celebrated a milestone.

Mary McJunkin turned 100 years old last month.

Mayor Craig McDaniel read the proclamation and referred to McJunkin as Rome’s own “Rosie the Riveter.”

“In 1941, she married the love of her life, Guy, who was then drafted into the Army, and they moved to Fort MacArthur in California.  Mary began working at the El Segundo airplane factory, working third-shift and commuting by Greyhound bus an hour to and from work.  Mary worked on an assembly line that manufactured parts for planes that were used during World War II, injuring her fingers and then being reassigned to operating machinery.”

McJunkin and her husband then moved to military bases in Kentucky and Oklahoma.

McJunkin returned to Rome after her husband was transferred to Italy.
