City commission approves downtown open container trial period

July 26, 2021–10:30 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

By a 5-3 vote, the Rome City Commission has approved an open container trial period.

The ordinance will allow public consumption of alcoholic beverages on a temporary trial basis within the Downtown District on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. from August 5 to October 30.

Any establishment within the Downtown District licensed to dispense alcohol by the drink is authorized to serve beverages in a plastic or aluminum cup of no more than 20 ounces.

Monday’s meeting was held in the Rome City Auditorium, which was packed with those for and against the ordinance.

This is the third time in recent years the commission has been asked to consider such an ordinance.

Previous attempts in 2017 and last year were voted down.

The city commission took no action on what has become another contentious issue….An agreement with the Rome City School System for the operation and management of Barron Stadium.

“We had a discussion at caucus,” said Rome City Commissioner Jamie Doss.  “We have requested that what I could call ‘the executive group,’ get together and work out some of the details to bring it back to the general administration committee.  Then we will take it from there.”
