A Polk County Grand Jury has returned indictments against two men, including a state lawmaker, in connection with the death of a bicyclist more than a year ago.
According to a news release, Ryan Dover was indicted on charges of felony hit and run, and reckless conduct while State Representative Trey Kelly was indicted on a single count of reckless conduct.
The charges stem from an incident in which Eric Keais died after being struck by a vehicle as he rode his bicycle on Main Street in Cedartown on September 11, 2019.
The news release states that Dover did not immediately stop and contact law enforcement and emergency medical services, as required by law, but instead immediately contacted Kelley to come to the scene.
As Keais laid in a ditch on the side of the road in need of emergency medical attention, law enforcement and emergency medical services were not contacted until approximately 45 minutes after the incident.
Keais later died from his injuries.
Kelley’s attorney, Lester Tate, told Polk.Today that his client will likely turn himself in Friday and that he plans to present evidence showing Kelley’s innocence.
