Rome/Floyd Parks and Rec: Powerade Power Dash 5K planned for Saturday

October 13th, 2020 – 10:00 AM

Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation –

The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a POWERADE Power-Dash 5k and Walk on Saturday at Ridgeferry Park…

The following is a press release for the event:

Date: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020

Location: Ridge Ferry Park

Health Walk: Walk waves begin at 9 a.m. with waves starting roughly every 20 minutes. The final wave is set to go off at 12:20.

Run Information: Running waves begin at 1:30 p.m. and will begin approximately every 20 minutes until the final wave at roughly 6:10 p.m.

Packet Pickup: Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation will host packet pick-up the week leading up to the race, starting on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Groups can pick up packets on Tuesday, Oct. 13 and Wednesday, Oct. 14. Starting Thursday, Oct. 15 anyone can pick up their race packets. Late registration will be accepted in-person only on those days as well. Packet pick-up times are from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Anyone who registered for the Leprechaun-a-thon and didn’t pick up their race shirt or get a refund can pick those up as well.

Quick reminder, there is no packet pick up on race day and no race-day registration. There is water and Powerade after the finish in front of the Coca-Cola Stage but no water stops on the course. After finishing, runners and walkers will be directed to the stage area where they can get a drink, take a photo and then proceed to their cars.

Awards will be announced on Sunday afternoon Oct. 18 and will be available to be picked up starting on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at RFPRA Headquarters at 1 Shorter Avenue.

What is a wave race: To keep the number of participants gathered at the start and to help spread out participants along the course, we will be starting walkers and runners in waves throughout the day. The walk is a non-timed event. The course starts and finishes at the same location allowing the chip sensors to record both your starting moment and finishing moment. That will be a participants’ official race time.

Wave times are designated by participants’ last name. Runners and walkers need to arrive 20 minutes before their scheduled time. Each wave will have corral areas set up to allow for social distancing. Each wave will also be broken up into smaller groups. Everyone is encouraged to wear the disposable mask from their race packets before the walk or run.

Garbage cans are set up just before and after the start line for tossing used masks.

If you would prefer a different time, please reach out to [email protected] by email only.

Time Changes: If a mass of registrations come in the times could shift a bit to ensure we have enough space for everyone. If this happens, we will let everyone know ahead of time and at packet pickup.

Walk details: The walk consists of portions of a gravel path and paved trail surface within Ridge Ferry Park. The distance is approximately 1.7 miles and will not be timed. Dogs on a leash are allowed during the walk, but walkers must clean up after their pet. We don’t need walkers and runners having to dodge things the rest of the day.

Run details: The run consists of portions of gravel path as well as paved trails within Ridge Ferry Park. The course is flat and fast with only one true hill. We ask runners who want to run with a baby jogger to participate in the first wave. Runners who want to run with their dogs must participate in the final wave at approximately 6 p.m.

Course Etiquette: Runners and walkers are usually really good about this. Runners and walkers should stay on the left hand side of the trail and spread out packs in no more than two across to leave room for others.

Starting line: The starting area will be marked to help with social distancing and there will be several trash cans to allow runners or walkers to toss disposable masks before they start if they would like to wear them.

Virtual option: If anyone would prefer to run the race virtually that will work too. We will mark the course with paint a week before the race, giving everyone time to run it. All virtual participants will need to send in a photo of their GPS watch showing time and distance to be eligible for awards.

Registration: Registration is now open. You can register online at active.com or visit 1 Shorter Avenue to register in person. The cost for the 5K is $25 and the cost of the heath walk is $20. There will be no race-day registration or race-day packet pickup.

Leprechaun roll-over registration: If you were registered for the Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-thon and didn’t request a refund, your registration rolls over to this event.

Post Race: There will be water and POWERADE near the Coca-Cola Stage but no fruit or anything to eat due to covid concerns.

Water: While we will have water at the finish, we won’t be able to man a water station in the current situation. If you feel like you will need water during the walk or run, please bring some with you.

Awards: The top finishers in their age groups as well as the first overall male and female, male and female master’s runners and male and female grandmasters runner receive awards.

Age Groups: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+
