UPDATE: Floyd County Schools posted this press release on Friday afternoon on the situation:

“ATTN FLOYD COUNTY FAMILIES: FCS shifts to Traditional Remote Learning for CHS, CMS, and PPS for August 24-28

As a result of written guidance received from Governor Kemp’s Office on August 19, 2020 informing Floyd County Schools (FCS) that all school personnel are not a part of Georgia’s essential critical infrastructure workforce, FCS is shifting to traditional-remote learning for Coosa High School, Coosa Middle School, and Pepperell Primary for the week commencing August 24, 2020 and ending August 28, 2020. The Governor’s new guidance has resulted in an unexpected quarantining of educators and staff even where they are asymptomatic and not COVID-19 positive. FCS is implementing these precautionary measures because of the Governor’s Office’s written guidance, and NOT because of any sudden or dramatic increase in positive COVID-19 cases. All other FCS schools will be participating in traditional in-school learning until further notice. As of this afternoon, there have been 12 positive COVID-19 cases confirmed among FCS students and employees, which have resulted in FCS’ implementing two-week quarantines for some 530 students and employees.

Inasmuch as the COVID-19 pandemic is a fluid situation, effective immediately all school closures will be made on an individual school basis as determined by the number of positive COVID-19 cases, the number student and staff quarantines as may be mandated by the Georgia Department of Health (DPH) and the Governor’s Office, and the ability to staff the facilities for purposes of keeping our students safe. FCS will publish future updates as circumstances may evolve or change. The weekly scenario chart previously published should be disregarded as it will no longer be used by FCS.

All FCS COVID-19 guidelines and quarantine requirements are subject to change based on information published by the Governor, DPH, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At this time, FCS’ Superintendent has made the discretionary decision to require all students, employees, and business essential visitors to wear face coverings or masks while indoors or upon entering any school offices or buildings. Masks or face coverings are also to be worn at all times when social distancing of at least 6 feet is difficult to implement or maintain across all FCS campuses. The CDC recognizes there are specific instances when wearing a face covering may not be feasible. In these instances, parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers, and school administrators should consider adaptations, alternatives, or other accommodations whenever possible. All FCS middle and high school coaches and student-athletes should follow GHSA guidelines while participating in practices and competitions. Spectators of all school-sponsored events are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings or masks as well.

Parents/guardians should notify their school principal if they or their child develops multiple symptoms and/or receives a positive COVID-19 test result. Sharing such information with FCS will be kept strictly confidential. Symptoms of COVID-19 include, but are not limited to, fever of 100.4 or higher, chills, new or persistent cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache, new loss of taste or smell, fatigue, and/or stomach issues (diarrhea, nausea or vomiting).

If you have any general questions, please refer to the FCS Return to Learn Plan which can be found HERE or on the homepage of the district website- www.FloydBOE.net.

We apologize for the confusion caused yesterday and appreciate the continued support of Floyd County stakeholders in keeping the health and safety of our staff and students our top priority!”
