City commission to discuss Confederate monuments, masks Monday night

July 12, 2020–2:48 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

Discussions about face masks and Confederate monuments are on the agenda for Monday night’s Rome City Commission meeting.

The commission will hear a recommendation to petition the State of Georgia to allow the city to relocate the statue of General Nathan Bedford Forrest from Myrtle Hill to Fort Norton.

Recommendations to establish an interpretation advisory committee and a monuments advisory committee are also on the agenda.

The commission will also discuss face masks as a way of slowing the spread of COVID-19.

During a joint city/county meeting last week, some indicated support for mandating masks in the City of Rome while others preferred a public education campaign instead.

Monday’s city commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.
