City considering temporary downtown public consumption ordinance

May 17, 2020–1:52 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Rome City Commission will consider an amendment to the city code Monday that would allow public consumption of alcohol downtown on a temporary basis.

Due to COVID-19 downtown pouring establishments have suffered a loss of business in the past 90 days.

Backers of the plan say allowing drinks to be consumed on the sidewalks and other public areas would give those establishments another way to survive.

It would also give the public another way to enjoy downtown while maintaining social distancing.

The proposed ordinance from the Alcohol Control Commission does come with restrictions.

They include a requirement to use a Downtown Development Authority approved cup no larger than 16 ounces and ending the public consumption period at 11 p.m. each day.

You can view the ordinance HERE.

The virtual Rome City Commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Facebook Live and Zoom.
