Legislation could change rules for U.S. Senate Special Election

January 30, 2020–7:00 a.m.

STAFF REPORTS

A bill that would change the rules for the special election for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Kelly Loeffler has cleared committee and appears to be headed for a vote in the Georgia House of Representatives for a vote.

House Bill 757 would eliminate the so-called “jungle primary” in which all candidates from both parties would compete at the same time and replace it with a party primary in May.

The winners of the Democratic and Republican Primaries would then run against each other in November.

The measure received bipartisan support in the House Governmental Affairs Committee with only one Republican voting against it.
