A Summerville man wound up in jail after being stopped at a checkpoint at Highway 114 and Bellah Avenue in Summerville.

Chattooga County sheriff’s deputies were assisting the Summerville Police Department at a checkpoint late last Saturday night when a man pulled up who was acting nervous.  When a deputy asked the man for his identification and insurance information, the deputy reported that he noticed a small lump in the corner of the man’s wallet.

The man’s identity was established as 53-year-old Michael Howard Nagle.  The deputy asked Nagle if there was anything illegal in his vehicle, to which Mr. Nagle replied “no.”  After searching Nagle’s vehicle, the deputy asked Mr. Nagle to put his hands on the hood of the car.  At that point, Nagle became agitated and asked why he was being searched.  The deputy informed Nagle that he had given consent to be searched.

The deputy looked in Nagle’s wallet and found a small clear bag.  The contents of the bag field tested positive for methamphetamine.  Nagle told the deputy that he didn’t know the drugs were in his wallet.

Nagle was charged with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance act and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
